Garry King’s STAR WARS Builds from 1982-85! (A Look into the Past of Scratch Model Building! Part 1)

Viewing these old build, and scratch build photos from famed Lego artist Garry King sparked something in me! I have so many memories going through my head of that time. I invite you all to share your own photos of your builds from an era before digital photography. Garry’s work here looks fantastic! And he was only 13 years of age! I want to dig out my old photos now! LOL

I have put together a collection of my early attempts at scratch building ( didn’t know that term when I built them). These are the only surviving photos and negatives I have of all the builds which is not many. Quite disappointing to be sure. That’s now history and how it was lost. Now having sold what survived over the years. Between all the house moves I had done in the past many were damaged. So many got badly damaged due to a leaking roof in a garage, damage while moving and a savage four footed hairy puppy.

From the films and TV Series I watched, I was hooked and I went out to the shops to see if I could purchase the kits. They were priced out of my reach. I was very disappointed. My mother said why not create your own. I had at school a very kind Art teacher who gave me cardboard for my ambitious attempts.

Among many other Sci-Fi models that I will show here on Modeler Magic in upcoming showings, around 1982 I built the Shuttle Tydirium, a 2 foot Star Destroyer,  five 3 inch Mini Star Destroyers, a Super Star Destroyer, and I even attempted to build an 2m X-Wing (I got the body structure built and then we had to move house) It never got finished. Then the family moved again then I began working full time in 1985. Everything was stored away and collected dust for years and years. Thank goodness for digital cameras and imagery. It made life easier and kept costs down when I take thousands of photos at any one time. Then there is the instant results.. good or bad. Got my first computer in 1999 and camera. The rest is history. So much happened in between that the old S.L.R. camera caught on film.

More to come for old Battlestar Galactica Builds, and even Blake 7!

Regards,
Garry King
