I have always wanted a Shuttlecraft I could get into… and these sets are beautiful! Thank you for the share David!
Back in 2004 when the first parts of “The Tressaurian Intersection” were being released I contacted Jimm Johnson and asked if there was anything I could do to help out. He put me in contact with David Weiberg and Gordon Smuder of MNFX (https://mnfx.com/) who were working on additional miniature sets (like the wrecked corridors and engine room of the Kongo), and the last one they needed was the shuttlecraft interior. They outlined the shot needed and asked if I could draw up plans. The primary goal was for the set to replicate the set seen in the original series. The one thing they had on hand was the chairs, which they provided me with so I could scale the rest of the set to match.
After a week of studying the existing footage of the original set, I drew up plans for a two wall set (starboard wall and front bulkhead) with ceiling and floor. The final dimensions came to 32.25″ long by 17.5″ wide by 13″ tall.
I had hoped to help out with construction, but wasn’t able to assist as much as I would have liked. The set was mainly built by Gordon Smuder, who e-mailed me some progress shots. I was able to make it over to their workshop to see the final working set, but I forgot my camera and didn’t get any shots of it.
When discussing the set during the years before the final act was released, I avoided bringing up the fact that it was a miniature and actually altered some of Gordon Smuder’s progress shots to make it look like it was a full size set. The set looked great in the final act and is a tribute to the artistry of both David Weiberg and Gordon Smuder.
