Newly shown artist Steve Smith recently completed this Botany Bay to go along side the 350 scale Enterprise!
This is the 1/350th scale Botany Bay resin kit from Fantastic Plastic. Built this kit for a cleint who wanted to display it with his Master Replicas USS Enterprise. Very fine kit. Few pinholes to deal with, but an easy fix with red auto putty. Did have to add some plastic shims between the cargo pod and main body to level out the main hull with the pod. Used a 5/16th diameter metal rod for support with a round 4 inch metal piece for the base. This was primed with auto primer, then coated with flat black.
The four panels at the back of the ship were photo etch pylon vents from the new round 2 TOS Enterprise. Pattern was a perfect match! Metal rods were used to attach them together. Liquid metal paste was used to give them added strength. Then holds were carefully drill into the supports coming out of the main body to extend the panels in their proper position.
After checking and filling pinholes, the ship was primed with auto primer. Then used a base coat of rust enamel mixed with a enamel tan. This mix was airbrushed onto the ship. Next came the weathering! All weathering was done by drybrushing! Silver for worn areas, and black and grays for streaks, plus a darker base color to break up the surface a bit. Then the ship was coated in flat to blend everything together, and placed on it’s stand!
I understand that my client is building a backdrop in his TOS display case to make it look like the studio shot with blue screen. Should be cool!
Overall, a fun kit to work with, even with the modification to the back for the panels.
