Y wing was built from a set of cast parts that were from a run of prototypes produced by Master Replicas in 2005 (I worked on the project)

It’s a hybrid model, combining all the things I liked about the various Y-Wings…

Unique features:

  • Two steady-on and two fflickering LEDs in EACH of the engines
  • Custom designed programmed board to drive the light features
  • All solder points securely sealed with heat-shrink tubing to prevent shorting any lights.
  • Fiber optics, plastic lenses, and photo etch in the cockpit
  • Fiber optic “light pipe” fed by a green and blue led in the Artoo unit that switches between the colors
  • Fiber optic “light pipe” fed by a red and yellow led in the Artoo unit that switches between the colors
  • Fiber optic bundle in the Artoo to simulate the “status” lights in the 1:1 prop
  • Artoo is red and white
  • Pilot is female with custom helmet markings (head is a resin Japanese Wonderfest item)
  • Canopy has “glass” in the windows
  • Many plant-on parts are original styrene
  • 9 Volt battery hides in one of the engine domes – accessed by sliding the cap off (it is pinned with brass rods and pressure fit)
  • Light switch is hidden on the engine
  • Front laser cannons are one piece machined brass, prototypes from Master Replicas
  • Real metal Allied heat sinks were used in the exhaust outlets
  • Most piping is metal, including large brass tubes the define the trailing edge of the engine “wings” that bridge the body
  • “Hash marks” on the body are real vintage Letraset dry transfer, as used by ILM in the mid to late 1970s
  • Hoses in the cockpit are metal spring “option parts” that I picked up in Tokyo
  • Torpedo tubes in the cockpit underside were hollowed out properly, unlike the MR model
  • Engine domes are ringed by four “clamps” that are MUCH more accurate than what were used on the final Master Replica Y-Wing – there are only a small handful of Y-Wings with this accurate detail on them, out there
  • LEM Shroud on the top rear section of the body was drilled out to replicate a rare top mount greeblie – a 1/12th race car brake caliper mounted to a real metal Allied heat sink
  • Cockpit assembly is secured to the main body via both 8_rad assemblies, but also strengthened by multiple brass rods that run the length of the neck – super secure.

This is the LED Setup that Jason used to make the R2 Unit lights change color!

Jason Eaton

Jason Eaton is a model builder who has spent the past fourteen years working with Star Wars license holders including Master Replicas, EFX, and Sideshow, creating paint masters and prototypes for many of the studio scale and scaled props, ships, and characters seen in the Star Wars films, and is honored to continue the work in this new era of Star Wars subjects. He has also performed this service for many other licenses and license holders such as Palisades Toys, Quantum Mechanix, Hollywood Collectibles Group, and Chronicle Collectibles, as well as the occasional private commission work for various private clients. His passion and dedication has sent him to the Skywalker Ranch archives, Tokyo Japan, and many other places, always striving to better the hobby and the work. He’s more of a builder and less of a collector, so sometimes his personal work will “leave the nest” to make way for the next hare-brained project! He also thinks speaking in the third person is weird.
