Kuhn Global’s – STAR WARS – MSLZ22 V3 Studio Scale X-Wing – RED 5 – Blue Screen Photos by Kuhn Global (Kurt Kuhn)

This piece was originally shown here on Modelers Miniatures & Magic back on January 19, 2009 and now updated to today’s showing standard! After purchasing the latest studio scale Hero X-Wing (the V3) from Mike Salzo back in 2008, I brought it to MTM Studio in order to replicate the filming miniature of Luke Skywalker’s RED 5 X-Wing (as seen in the original Star Wars in 1977). In the final piece you see in these photos today, we show Luke looking over his shoulder just after Darth Vader takes out R2-D2 (while R2 is fixing the top starboard engine stabilizer). Of course R2-D2’s panels are all extended with the shock of the hit he just received from Vader. Other than those two changes, this is very close to being a replica of the highest standard. I was thrilled when Mike Salzo purchased the original Captain Cardboard studio scale X-Wing Patterns (which then came to be known as the Salzo V1) well over a decade ago now. Let me see if my memory will serve us here today. Soon after Mike Salzo began selling the V1, he took the Captain Cardboard pattern masters and thickened the hull of the studio scale X-Wing. He added a bit more detail, and that became the V2 release. Soon after that, using the RED 3 photos taken in the Lucasfilm Archives, Mike scratch built an entirely new hero studio scale X-Wing in 2007. What was made of that kit is what you see before you today with these Blue Screen photos taken by me (Kurt Kuhn) in 2008. Since that time, Mike made even more refinements to match the different studio models used in the filming of Star Wars in 1976. He made several versions after this V3. There were versions 3.1 .. all the way up to version 5.1 I believe. Mike did such an amazing job making this X-Wing with the help of some very noted artists of this art form. That stated, it is a shame that these are no longer available to the public, yet understandable that it was time to move forward with other items Mike had going on. I can tell you this X-Wing still adorns the Collection here today, and is valued quite high being one of the 6 replicas of the 1977 original film on display here. Worthy of note is that of all the X-Wings on display here, they were all photographed just as they were filmed back in 1977… without canopy glass. Since the photos were taken, and to be displayed here in the way I wish to show them, they all have their canopy glass installed now. They are all remarkable, and I shall always keep a place in my heart for RED 5. It was a pleasure to photograph it back in 2008, and continues to shine with everyone who views it.
