KORBANTH Studio Scale X-Wing – The Kuhn Global ROGUE ONE Captain Merrick Fighter by Dan Grumeretz

We have so many studio scale X-Wings here on display. In fact, we still have all of the X-Wings we have replicated from the original Star Wars models used in 1977, with a few that are even one-offs of great imagination. We also have the concept X-Wing, the very first ICONS X-Wing (the one Capt Cardboard utilized to start the studio scale X-Wing Kit craze), two Korbanth 1/24 T-70 X-wings, the Poseidon 1/24 X-Wing, an actual Capt Cardboard X-Wing (built by RL Bleecker as Blue 7 thirteen years ago)….. and a Partridge in a Pair Tree! Am I bragging? Maybe a little…LOL. That stated… I know of a few private collections that have way more than we have displayed here…. which truly must be amazing to view. Getting back to what we have here…including this one, all in all there are thirteen 1/24 (studio scale for some) X-Wings displayed here. Some may recall a YouTube Video I placed up 5 or 6 years ago titled “Kuhn Global/Modeler Magic X-Wing Heaven” where we had shown the six studio scale X-Wing’s… Red 1 thru Red 6. And while I had announced we were going larger back then, that plan it still in the works with seven more X-Wings in the works that shall be much larger. I am very grateful to have what we have to show everyone.
This one that we show today is built from the new KORBANTH studio scale Kit (formerly announced as Sith Planet). I have been excited about this because it is a modified version from an original pattern that was used to make the ICONS release a very long time ago. Anyone in the know will tell you it is that pattern that has direct lineage to the PYRO used in 1977-1983’s Star Wars Trilogy. When I received this model kit from KORBANTH (their very first cast of it), Dan and I looked it over and we were both very impressed. (You may view my REVIEW and Photos of it HERE that is the KIT ALERT I had posted for everyone to purchase. As a matter of fact it is those parts that this Blue Leader was built from! The Instructions may be found through that page as well). It fit together like it was machined! That stated, I asked Dan to make a few modifications that you may review below. Though some may state my X-Wings have their wings too open, I have always preferred that more aggressive look. Even the concept artist’s McQuarrie, Johnston and Cantwell created their vision with much wider opened wings. Thus most of my X-Wings are so… including this Blue Leader from Rogue One. I believe they are opened to be 1.5 inches wider than what comes as the stock version of this kit. You will better see what they look like with the upcoming Blue Screen photos. Also of note…. every marking on this build was painted on… there are no decals. Dan had utilized a decal sheet from smaller X-Wing kit to look at what markings he may use, or have missed from the movie screen captures he utilized to create this piece.
There have already been a few fantastic builds of this kit by different artists shown on Modeler Magic. For this one, Dan did a magnificent job, as did Mark Worley when he modified one of the original ICONS Patterns to become this kit. (Mark was a Prop Master at ICONS). Dan even made the pilot a bit smaller to match what we viewed of the actor playing Captain Merrick sitting inside the cockpit. Heh heh… it even looks like Captain Merrick!
I am thrilled to show this today. And to artist Dan Grumertz…. you are a fantastic artist Dan…. amazing work! I would like to thank Dan Grumeretz, Randy Johnson of KORBANTH, and Mark Worley for their outstanding Professionalism in getting this quality kit released for all to build.
